This book is part of a series, this is book 16 and while I haven't read all the books in the series, I have read 7 of them and not in order. I love that this series works as a series and each book as a standalone.
What can you expect? A gruesome murder that kicks off a seriously fast paced mystery. I love Kate. She is a brilliant MC and she always aims to do the right thing but when her brother becomes a suspect... WOWWEEEEE
The audio was brilliant, its actually the first book in the series I actually listened to and now I have library holds for all the books haha!
4.5 stars!!
The Burning is packed with action, danger, red herrings, and a couple things that will have you “Ooo Ooo” like Horshack on Welcome Back, Kotter. I keep coming back for more Burkholder for a reason: it's a guaranteed good ride.
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
3.5 stars. Subtracting a few points from the latest installment of this reliable series because 1) Kate and the rest of her team are oblivious to the perpetrator's identity long after the reader gets it; and 2) Kate engages in some close-to-TSTL* behavior (even for a police chief). There is more investigation-related violence than usual, which I don't care for, but Kate and Tomasetti's marriage is off to an intriguing start.
*Too Stupid To Live, especially characters who put themselves in danger by doing stupid shit like trying to run from the serial killer while wearing high heels, or doing a solo expedition into a creepy, boarded-up house without even texting someone your location.
