Attempted ReRead in December 2023DNF - PG 40Why?‘Later Qwilleran wondered about he real reason for declining to dine. Most young women welcomed his invitations. He preened his moustache at the recollection of past successes. [...] His doctor was eager for his invitations; why not his attorney?‘This is after a whole slew of creepy, predatory behavior towards the young woman in question. (Sitting too close on the couch, where she puts her briefcase between them; asking her lunch and dinner where she makes up pretty obvious excuses to both of them; and this very delightful nugget: ‘[...]Qwilleran ushered Penelope into the library, enjoying the scent she was wearing - subtly feminine yet not unprofessional. He noted her silky summer suit, exquisitely tailored. She could pass for a fashion model, he thought. Why was she practicing law in this backwoods town? He looked forward to researching the question in depth.')This is another male character going on the list that I cannot believe women wrote him (with Arthur Hastings in [b:The Mysterious Affair at Styles 52843028 The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercule Poirot, #1) Agatha Christie https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1585632445l/52843028.SY75.jpg 3366260]) and they are, ostensibly, supposed to be likable. Or at least not sound like lecher perverts that creep me out.A little backstory on this reread?I read 27 Cat Who... books all before I turned 20. Most of them were between the ages of 8 and 14. After Agatha Christie, this is the first ‘adult' cozy mystery author I remember reading. I read these books like crazy and had fond memories of them - even if I couldn't actually remember anything beyond the basics, I recalled liking them.In my attempts this year to try to get re-involved with cozy mysteries, I have been attempting to reread some that I liked. I selected this book in the series because it has the highest average rating on Goodreads. (It's also, not coincidentally, I believe, the first where Qwill is in Pickax City - which he calls Pickup City, in a totally not at all demeaning, I'm better than you, joke.)So, I tried it, and never again will I subject myself to this creepy, dirty old man. (And I am mildly distressed at how many sexist pigs are in the cozy mysteries I used to read.)
