I haven't read all of these, so I was a bit surprised to jump into so much family drama. I guess that's what I get for not reading them in order. It was entertaining, but it did seem to detract from the mystery.
The mystery was good and I liked the history. I anticpated some of the twists. The historical details were great and helped to keep the bad guy on his toes. There were a lot of people around this story, so it kept me guessing about who we could trust.
I can see that Melanie is being pressured to evaluate herself, which should lead to some character development, but there doesn't seem to be anyone in her life to help her process this. It seems like we might be getting that in the next book. I'm not sure how I feel about the marriage drama. I'm not sure either one of them are admitting their own problems in this. Again, maybe that is in the next book.
So it seems like the next book will have a mystery and lots of family drama as well. Not sure if that makes me excited to read it or not.
