The City is about a young boy named Jonah Kirk who has warnings of something bad to come that will not only affect him, but those he loves. He meets Pearl who claims to be the city in flesh and says she is the one responsible for the warnings. She appears here and there throughout the book with no other real significance, except at the end where she saves Jonah.
With help from his neighbor, and his neighbor's friends, Jonah sets out to discover what the upcoming disaster might be. We follow their story, while they attempt to work out the mystery. However, it's not solved in time and of course the disasterous event occurs.
I used to really enjoy reading Koontz as he had the knack for the weird and supernatural. He also used to keep the thrill alive in his books. Lately, however, the books I've been reading, while the writing itself is beautiful and flows really well, lack everything else outside of that. This was an extremely long and boring read...even with the beautiful writing.
