I just finished The Dark Edge of Night by Mark Pryor and here are my thoughts
Henri Lefort is hoping for some peace but with the Nazi flags and Gestapo haunting the streets of France, he knows Christmas will not be a quiet time. He isn't wrong. The Gestapo wants him to investigate the disappearance of a neurologist, a man involved in a top secret project in one of Paris's hospitals.
Working for the enemy doesn't sit well with the inspector but that does not stop him from doing his real job. Looking for a missing scientist isn't his priority, a murder is but when he learns that the victim's brother also works at the same hospital as the missing German, he knows something more is going on.
Knowing what he now knows has put him in danger and the last thing he needs is to bring down the SS onto him and everyone he loves as well.
Firstly, this is book 2 in this series. I knew this before I started, for once, and it stands well as a standalone read.
This book has excellent pacing and I loved the surprising turns the book takes. I really enjoyed Lefort's wise guy routine and his quick witted dialogue. I love his big heart and I have ordered book 1 now so I can catch up on what I missed. I love WW2 reads and this one really did well in blending historical fiction with a mystery thriller.
I love Paris so the book's setting was absolutely perfect for me and I could tell a lot of research went into this book. I always appreciate that. It was definitely a surprise for me as I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.
I enjoyed the ending and it has set it up perfectly for the next installment,
