I enjoyed reading the book, but really liked his other books much better. I think part of the problem was that I was never really “invested” in the characters. As a result, I found myself just wishing for a conclusion rather than “rooting” for a particular character in the book.
I wasn't bothered by the introduction of magic into a historical context as I enjoy a good fantasy yarn.
I highly recommend the author's historical fiction such as Whisky Rebellion.
