Aesop's animal fables are some of the earliest stories ever told, thought to have been composed by a slave in Greek antiquity and giving glimpses of a world that is harsh, pitiless and yet also eerily familiar. A selection of Aesop's fables in this Little Black Penguin.
They are more often than not very short - a few sentences, and followed up with moral.
Over 2500 years old, the morals are generally as relevant now as then, although somewhat pessimistic (ie the ones about knowing ones place in society), and generally use animals or a mixtures of animals and people.
Short and sweet. 4 stars.
