This is one of my all-time favourite stories. The scenario, the writing, the characters, the interplay of the characters, and the somewhat unexpected twist at the end; all are first-rate. I was surprised and delighted to find it available as an e-book; I've had two copies of it on paper for a long time.

It's a pity there's no more of it. But the story is complete in itself and I don't see a good way to extend it.

I suppose in principle it's a sad story, because all of the characters are facing major problems, and a happy resolution seems unlikely. However, the author mercifully ends the story while there's still some hope left; and perhaps the horse will learn to sing.
