The House Witch

I liked this book even though it was very slow and not much happens.

Finlay has just arrived at the castle and is starting his new job as the cook. While there is a war brewing in the background, it’s not mentioned much, and the book focuses on Fin settling into his job and finding people he can rely on.

I really liked how this book shows the day to day life of Fin and there are even some scenes from the king’s POV. It was light and I liked all the character interactions. The only thing that was missing for me was for there to be some interactions that don’t necessarily have a purpose (for example a casual conversation while they’re working) because it felt like everything happened for a reason.

I liked Fin and seeing him dealing with every new person he’s introduced to (Mage Lee, Mr Howard, Annika’s brother, Lord Fuks, the captain). I liked Hannah, and despite their rough start, I ended up liking the kitchen knights. I liked the occasional scene from the king’s POV and even though I know it’s not realistic, I want to see more scenes showing him interacting with Fin and the other members of the group that got drunk with them.

There were some things that were mentioned, but I thought should have been developed a bit more. For example, the war which is talked about but not much is happening with it. I’m wondering to what extent Fin’s going to be involved in it. Also, Fin’s relationship with Annika was fine, but I wanted more development and interactions between them. I’m looking forward to seeing how their relationship will be taken by the royals and nobility.

I think I’m going to continue with the series because I liked the characters and while slow, I’m curious what else is going to happen.
