Benson's Model

The Judgment Books is a hidden gem for those who's not only enjoying a modern horror/neo-gothic literature, but also interested in the roots of the genre. The mighty Lovecraft spoke well of Benson's works. It would be way too obvious to compare this book (1895) with Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890).

Frank is an artist. Every time he draws someone he consumes a part of model's identity. Then he decides to draw himself. With all good and bad sides. Jekyll and Hyde. One portrait. He faces his fears and his past. The novel goes around questioning an artist nature, mental health and fear of losing personality.
