"Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. This is a great start to a new series. This has everything that I loved about the Bosch series with a new younger protagonist. As a female reader I am very happy with how well Ballard is written, she is complex and compelling. Looking forward to the best one!
Like the new character. Interesting book overall.
Michael Connelly has an envious career–sixty million books sold, multiple series, and he crushes all of them. Now that Harry Bosch is retired, Connelly wasn't about to hang up his keyboard. He just keeps going. I'm pretty sure that Connelly could die and his corpse could still crank out a novella on muscle-memory alone. So, Connelly needs a new hero: Enter Renee Ballard.
Gritty, tough, and no-nonsense with a surfer's soul, Ballard is a worthy successor to Harry Bosch. “The Late Show” is a solid debut, and I'm excited to see more of her.
This is the 1st Michael Connelly book I've read and was impressed! Good mystery with 1 major case and a couple of small cases thrown in also. The book didn't just stay on 1 case at a time but worked on each for a bit and switched off for a while onto another case, I liked that! Big surprise at end on the big case but I won't say what it is. I guess this is a new character that Connelly is introducing and I look forward to more “Renee Ballard”! I think you will like this book! DN
