I grew up in rural England and can say, with 100% certainty, that this book is an accurate tale of the horrors of tradition and mob mentality. People do things because they've always done things. They don't question tradition, and they feel absolved of responsibility because they're part of the in-group.

This short story is as important today as it was in the 1940s.
