I'm sorry to say this has to do mostly with expectations. It sounded like a book I'd love, and Penny for me was just tiresome after a couple of chapters. It was slightly redeeming when she looked for help at the end, but by then her destructive personality disguised as independent had become a bit sour and what in the beginning had sounded as a fresh protagonist who just spoke her will was just misguided. Anyway, one can't always win. And it's still better to have a real woman who has actually flaws and misery than the perfect holier than thou usual kind.
