The later books were a bit more action/quest focused than the first. I think they were also not quite as dark. But they still were very character focused books and that is what I really liked about the series.
This last books is set about 6 or so years after the first books and the kids are older. They are grappling with what it means to grow up and maybe move apart. In many ways this was my favorite of the series.
