Just a brief note. Mostly, I enjoyed this book. I found the hero sufficiently likable. However, horrifying as it is to say, I wish this tale had remained a total sausage fest. I had a terrible time with the last couple hundred pages. Denna. The whole Denna thing. The romance was killing me. Kvothe's mom is an enjoyable character, but after her, I found most of the females trite and tedious. The men are far more engaging, and that's a pity.

I do appreciate how detailed Rothfuss' magic is. The magic is perhaps his strongest writing element in this novels. I certainly found it fascinating. And parts of the world he's built were very well done. My complete judgment is held until I've read book 2, but he seems to be doing a believable job.

But...how many times can Kvothe possibly be heroically knocked unconscious here?

Still, all in all, this was a good book, an enjoyable book, except for that pesky romance. I'll be happy to see what Kvothe (and Bast!) do next.
