Mary Walker was born into slavery. She had to work hard all her young life, and as a slave, she was not allowed to learn to read. She was set free when she was fifteen, but she had no time to learn to read, for she had to work hard for her family to help earn a living.

Finally, when Mary was 116, she enrolled in a class to learn to read, and by the next year, she could do it. She was named the nation's oldest student.

A very inspiring story.
