Good characters and a good setting
There are several things I like about the book, that religion is dealt with as a serious thing, that the history of New Orleans hangs over the people and influences what they do, and that there are unique strong women characters. The crime is a little too ‘ripped from the headlines' for me to totally settle in to the story. There are parts that slow down with the amount of description. So it's okay.
