This was one of my favorites growing up. My sister and I requested my dad read this book to us on several occasions growing up. Now, I have the pleasure to read it to my boy.
This is like a Christan Hardy Boys book, if you will. The story is simple, but the right place for young readers.
What I like about this book:
- It demonstrates how it can be fun to give without the expectation of a reward or fear of punishment. It's easy to volunteer when there is a tangible reward, like money, or intangible, having people think you're a good person. Or fear of punishment, like people thinking less of me for what I am not doing. That ante is upped if that person is God.
What I didn't like:
- Not so much a dislike, but something I struggled with. I stumbled over words in a number of places. I would point to the fact that it is a style of writing that I don't often read, much less aloud. This is in a way a good thing because my boy sees that even adults misread words or sentences.
The bottom line is that this book has an adventure that keeps the attention of a young mind while sharing the idea of giving from one's heart without the motivation of any kind of reward.
