An unflinching look at the cost communism extracted from people. Bobby and Alexandra were awesome characters. I did feel like Stoyan was not compelling until the end, but that part of the story couldn't come earlier. The rest of the Lazarovi and their relatives are sweet enough and you want good for them. The plot was a slow build to a shocking, but pleasant ending.
Not my favorite Kostova, but you really feel her heart in this book and that has left a strong impression on me.
