Why?
Short answer:
Likely animal death and possession.
Long answer:
No one, and I mean no one, is more heart broken over this than I am. This is a book series that I have wanted to start for so very, very long. I eve wanted it badly enough at one point that I thought about actually buying the books. After all, this is a must read author for me.
Thankfully my library got the whole series and before I even started the first book, I was figuring out if I could finish the series (10 novellas) this year.
Then I started reading it and for the first chapter it was pretty fun in a chatty contemporary way. I knew it was a portal fantasy and while I don't like what I consider the easy way out and an excuse for info-dumping, I have read portal fantasy's that I have loved.
Then the second chapter started and things took a decided turn for the macabre with the talking bones. I could deal with that, though.
What I couldn't deal with was the killing the talking dog (couldn't deal with a talking dog to begin with, honestly) - that might have been a witch or might have been cursed by a witch or might have been an actual dog - and then the talking bones possessing the dog's dead body and wearing it like a meat suit.
I'm out!
