It has Hikaru’s face. It has Hikaru’s voice. It even has Hikaru’s memories. But whatever came down from the mountains six months ago isn’t Yoshiki’s best friend.
While “Hikaru” is not the Hikaru he once knew, Yoshiki must admit that this new entity has become a friend in his own right. But his true identity remains a mystery...even to the impostor himself! When their research into the town’s history brings them to the library, the boys discover an unsettling clue about the mysterious happenings in the region. Though, the question still stands of what “Hikaru” and the Nounuki-sama mentioned in Hikaru’s note might be—and whether they aren’t in fact one and the same...

Oh this one was EXTRA scary. I do not like the thing with the really long neck - no thank you.
Cruel, cruel cliffhanger. This series had a middling start, propped up by some seriously anxiety-inducing art and clever lettering throughout.
But with each new volume, the story gets better and better, the creepiness reaches new heights, and I’m left in awe of the fantastic panel work on display.
As far as I know, it’s already confirmed that Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu will end with Volume 10, so I have high hopes that Mokumokuren will avoid the usual trappings of this genre.
With the mystery now unraveling at lightning speed and a clear end in sight, I can’t wait for the next volume to be released in March. Plus, the upcoming Netflix series promises to be a visual spectacle, if nothing else.
Don‘t get tripped up by the BL tag. This is a horror story with queer characters, not a queer story with horror character.
Fully recommended, 4.5 Stars.
