A short sci-fi story, taking place on a remote planetoid - a dark and dangerous mining world - where squatters, or moles as they are known, form a unique subculture. The Tourist in question is an academic, studying ‘extraterrestrial ethnomusicology' and wants to journey deep into the mine structure to observe the sounders. For the moles, it is a violent and dangerous existence. For the tourist, a remarkable opportunity.
The writing has good pace, and moves quickly through the story. There is enough description to piece together the backstory, but only just, and in this way, it leaves it open for interpretation.
3 stars.
