Alice is a teenager who is carrying more than her share of stupid other people's burdens. You can't help but think that she is the only mature person in the whole book, even when you want to yell at her for not standing up for herself - and then you finally get it that probably she's right.
In any case, the book is told by others' POV - you only get to hear Alice at the end - and it is sad in the way only teenagers can be.
