She is single, she lives in a small apartment, and she is short on money--just like the Woman in the Yellow Cardigan, who lures her to a job as a housekeeper at a hotel, where she too is a housekeeper. Soon, the Woman in the Purple Skirt is having an affair with the boss and all eyes are on her. But no one knows or cares about the Woman in the Yellow Cardigan. That's the difference between her and the Woman in the Purple Skirt. Studiously deadpan and chillingly voyeuristic, and with the off-kilter appeal of the novels of Ottessa Moshfegh, The Woman in the Purple Skirt explores envy, loneliness, power dynamics, and the vulnerability of unmarried women in a taut, suspenseful narrative about the sometimes desperate desire to be seen.

The Woman in the Purple Skirt conta sobre a vida de uma moça, conhecida por sua característica saia roxa, sua dificuldade em encontrar um emprego fixo, de como as crianças da vizinhança gostam de pregar peças nela, mas não do seu próprio ponto de vista ou de um ponto de vista onipresente, mas sim do ponto de vista da mulher do cardigã amarelo, que é obcecada em observá-la.
Apesar da mulher da saia roxa (eventualmente, revela-se que seu nome é Mayuko Hino) ser a personagem titular, boa parte do livro é você ficar se perguntando como diabos a mulher do cardigã amarelo (Gonda) sabe tanto sobre ela, muitas vezes dizendo em que exato minuto ela comeu em tal lugar. Ela é tão obcecada que acaba fazendo Mayuko encontrar um trabalho de limpeza no mesmo hotel em que ela trabalha. Assim, elas vivem como colegas de trabalho, mas acabam nunca interagindo. Gonda é uma pessoa invisível, você esquece que ela está lá, mas ela está te observando a todo o momento.
Com esse emprego que Mayuko encontra, ela acaba mudando aos poucos. Ela chega como uma mulher desajeitada e extremamente tímida, os colegas acham até bonitinho, mas tudo muda quando ela acaba ganhando mais confiança nesse emprego que, ao invés de ser só um bico, vira um emprego fixo. Ela começa a arrumar melhor seu cabelo, pintar as unhas, etc. Eventualmente, ela começa a sair com o chefe, ganha um salário maior que as colegas, e nisso as pessoas que antes achavam bonitinho seu jeito desajeitado e até zoavam ela, começaram a ficar com inveja, fofocar e inventar mentiras, além de ignorar ela no trabalho.
Eu entendo que esse livro tenta falar da sociedade no Japão, dificuldade em conseguir emprego, como uma mulher é vista pelos outros, etc. e já li muitos romances japoneses e sei que é uma leitura completamente diferente do que estamos acostumados no ocidente, mas achei que esse livro poderia ter sido mais interessante dentro da cabeça da Mayuko e não pelos olhos da Gonda. Foi um livro que eu sei que aconteceram várias coisas mas meu sentimento é de que aconteceu vários nadas.
Natsuko Imamura's The Woman In The Purple Skirt is gripping enough that I read it in a single sitting today. Starting off quirky but always unsettling (it's a book about obsession after all), it gets progressively darker as it continues, but not without a certain dry sense of humour throughout. Really enjoyed this!
I picked this up on a whim thinking it sounded interesting and I was not at all disappointed. It was different from anything else I typically read and I really enjoyed it.
When I read a book (or watch a movie/tv show) about a stalker, it tends to be about sexual attraction, ex lovers, etc. This one was just about The (lonely) Woman in the Yellow Cardigan obsessing over how much she wanted to be The Woman in the Purple Skirt's friend. It was kind of sweet in that way. Well, as sweet as a story about a stalker can be. Although, the book wasn't really about The Woman in the Yellow Cardigan. We don't even get many details about her, we mostly get information about The Woman in the Purple Skirt, as if the book is just about her and The Woman in the Yellow Cardigan is simply a subjective narrator. A great quick read!
