The author visits a Pacific island on which the principal relaxation is feeding the sharks, almost acquires treasure in the Bolivian Andes, comes upon a cluster of forgotten pyramids in the desert of the Sudan and journeys undaunted to the remote sierras of Spain.

This book contains around twenty essay type stories on varied locations - although Spain and Thailand feature heavily. I have always enjoyed the writing of Norman Lewis, and as usual, the more passion for the place he is writing about, the better the writing.
Stories that were particularly memorable in this collection for me included:
In Essex, which I believe I have read before in another of his collections... about his time setting up in County to write.
Khartoum and back the Nile.
Among the Bulls the bullfighter and his ‘art'.
Goa return travels to Goa in India.
Burning the Trees the sad devastation of the Amazon rainforest.
Loke's Merc A story about a car Lewis should have swapped when he had the chance.
Some 5 star reads in here, and some four star reads. Fewer three star reads, and only one or two I must have missed the point of! 4 stars overall from me.
