My introduction to Warren Ellis.

It was all right. I wasn't overly impressed with the overall story. It jumps around quite a bit, actually too much, and gives you hints of story; but I found it difficult to bond with any one storyline, with the exception of the young artist in China.

Strange monoliths from space land on earth and do nothing for ten years, but then things slowly start happening, and that's really about it. The story is bookended by brief dialogues in NYC, but the middle bits jump around various parts of the world, to highlight how mankind interacts with Trees or interacts with each other because of the Trees.

The best part by far was the sweet story between the little Chinese artist and the girl he meets in the art colony. That part was beautiful and sad.

The art is all right. Some pages are pretty, some are serviceable. I'm not amazed, and some of the characters looked too much alike, so it got a little confusing. But I'd check out the next volume.
