Twilight of the Elites by Christopher Hayes

Mixing deft political analysis, this timely social commentary describes how society produces leaders who are out of touch with the people they have been trusted to govern leading to a crisis of authority.

Put it down after second sentence:

> “AMERICA FEELS BROKEN. Over the last decade, a nation accustomed to greatness and progress has had to reconcile itself to an economy that seems to be lurching backward.”

Mistook this for a serious book.

At least it was only $1.99.

Well researched and clearly written progressive book.

While it's an interesting read, the title is certainly misleading. First, the book establishes that “Elites” refers to two distinct but overlapping groups of people. Clearly, it's not a useful classifier. Second, it isn't hard to show that the meritocratic system is broken. I would have liked a prescription for restoring equality of opportunity in America, and that's not really on offer here.
