Leah Frothen has spent five years in self-imposed exile, recovering from a failed relationship and hating herself for abandoning her baby daughter. Now she's back in Welce, determined to find her place in society and learn to be a mother. When the regent asks her to spy on mysterious ambassadors from a visiting nation, Leah finds herself developing a dangerous friendship with an unscrupulous foreign woman and falling in love with a man she's not even sure she can trust. And soon she learns that everyone -- her regent, her lover, and even her daughter -- have secrets that could save the nation, but might very well break her heart. --

A great addition to a strong series. The last 60 pages are heart-stoppingly exciting, and the build-up provides Shinn with an opportunity to deepen her exploration of the unique culture and characters she has developed in the first three Elemental Blessings books. Anyone who met Leah in [b:Jeweled Fire 21528313 Jeweled Fire (Elemental Blessings, #3) Sharon Shinn https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1425345470s/21528313.jpg 40855274] will want to see her find happiness when she returns to her homeland of Welce, and Unquiet Land allows her to demonstrate both the courage and cunning she previously displayed, as well as a rapidly growing maternal love as she gingerly develops a relationship with the five year old daughter she abandoned at birth. Said five-year old daughter is maybe a little too mature and wise for her age, although one possible reason for her equanimity is revealed late in the book. The object of Leah's romantic attention is interesting but somewhat problematic for me; the Big Secret from his past that keeps them apart is one that I had trouble accepting, despite his honorable and brave behavior. Your mileage may vary.Lots of appearances by characters in the earlier books, especially Zoe, Darien, and Josetta. It's not obvious to me who would be the heroine of the next book, but I hope that there is one featuring additional strong female characters and revealing more interesting facts about this fascinating world.
