DNF - PG 41
Why?
What really gets me is this book is billed as feminist and I'm like ‘no, it's not'. Or, if it is, it's the absolute worst form of feminism - okay, second worst. I didn't deal with TERF-y crap but Tanya definitely strikes me as the sort to be judgey of trans people if only because she's judgey of literally everyone.
Tanya is the sort of ‘feminist' girl that is brash and shrill and, yes, judgey of other women. I really pretty much met my end with this book when she refers to another girl as a ‘tart'. I mean, I already didn't like her, her of the angry retorts and stamping her foot like a spoiled brat, but I just didn't need that. She acts like the only way to be a strong woman character (TM) is to be as loud and pushy as possible.
Also, I read another review that said there's sexism/misogyny in this book and that made me realize why Tanya's interactions with every male character felt so slimy. It's not over the top, super noticeable, but to me it just feels like these micro-aggressions that the whole world is just steeped in. It's just really gross and unpleasant.
I'm not here for this.
And I'm not here for Tanya.
