I think it was going for satire, teensy bit of social commentary in the vein of ‘landed gentry = 🙄'. Occasionally cheeky and silly, but overall a bit too one-note in the vein of ‘everything is trying to kill you and here's some grisly illustrations for extra vibes'. I guess if you're boiling a subgenre down to its stereotypes, the reader shouldn't be surprised that it feels a little trope-y and tired. I wanted ridiculous more than gory.
