This author and book resonated with me as both a parent and a college academic advisor. Some of it may seem like common sense but it's all worth repeating. One thing I was reminded as I read her book (and something I notice daily in my profession) is that there are a lot of really amazing young people making their way in the world. Let's support them and then get out of their way!
I actually really struggled with how to rate this book. I liked it and also really disliked it at the same time. I ended up giving it 4 stars just because it wasn't so clear cut and really made me think. At times it felt like the author was trying too hard but other moments were perfect. This one will stick with me a little longer than normal.
While I really enjoyed the story and diving into Cuba's history a bit, overall the book was quite repetitive with so-so writing. I would still recommend it to people because it held my attention and gave me a lot to think about, but I just couldn't give it more stars.
Quite possibly the best book I've read in several years. It's by no means an easy read. It's depressing, disheartening, stressful, and brought me to tears more than once. However the book ultimately carries a greater message of hope and resilience. This is a book every person should read.
