I feel at some points the main character, Helena, was too insufferable and contradictory. Why would she decide to kill herself in order to protect her memories from getting uncovered, but then turn around and try to remember them on her own? I feel that there were many ways she could've killed herself if she was actually trying. I also found it frustrating how poorly she was treated and talked to and she just let it happen to her like a pushover.
I was wondering how the author was gonna turn this into a romance between Helena and Kaine seeing how terrible he was treating her. I was really hoping and praying this wouldn't turn into a "I can fix him" scenario where she turns the evil guy good with the power of love. Thankfully the flashback cleared that up and I think it was a good slow burn romance. It made me really excited to go back to the present and she what would happen between them now that her memories are unlocked.
I think the book felt a little rushed towards the end, but overall I'm glad it turned out the be a happy ending.
I went into this story with no prior knowledge of what it was about. I didn't expect to be so absorbed and emotionally invested in the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the struggles of both characters, the heart wrenching losses, and the resolution that helped restore the village. My only complaint was the use of words that were never explained, but then again this is a prequel to a series. I think it's unfortunate that we'll never see these characters again since the author had given up on continuing this series.
