I admit; I love a well-written love story, I like the concept of time travelling, and I like stories with real, flawed characters in them. So this is gonna be brief: This book is definitely a must read!! I read quite a few books every year, most of them quite good. My favourite authors are Margaret Atwood and Dean Koontz, and I've read books by those two during this year...but I must say, that this book is the best I've read in a VERY long time!!
Some may find it too sentimental.....but who, among us, didn't get a sinking feeling in our stomachs when Henry visited November 16, 2011??
Highly highly highly recommended for ANYONE!!
The last King book I read before this, was ‘Bag of Bones', which I absolutely loved. But this...the opening story, ‘Autopsy Room Four', was quite funny; the next one, ‘The Man in the Black Suit', could have been so much more, but still delivered a few chills. The title story was somewhat interesting, and ‘That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is In French' had an interesting idea...but none of them quite delivered the punch. I didn't read ‘The Little Sisters of Eluria', since I never gave a hoot about King's Dark Tower-series, and I read ‘Riding the Bullet' a couple of yeas ago, and couldn't bear going through it again...it's utter crap! Mr King has written a good deal of great books, but if you wanna read his short stories, go for ‘Night Shift' or ‘Skeleton Crew'. This one doesn't do him - or the readers - any justice.
What's not to like? I won't get into the story itself, it can be read elsewhere, but come on!! The descriptions, the plotlines, the characters, the riddles, everything. This has to be The Masterpiece of Dean Koontz's career thus far. This is a perfect story, almost as perfect as they come, it even outdoes my faves such as ‘Whispers', ‘Intensity', ‘Sole Survivor' and ‘From the Corner of His Eye'. To those of you who didn't even get through half of the book: Give it another chance!! This is perfection.
What's not to understand? True, the lead character, Ethan Truman, gets killed off in chapter two and is back in chapter three, but if you guys'n'gals just hang in there, by the end it will make perfectly sense, and if you don't get touched and aren't filled with hope and joy when the last page is turned, then I dare say that your heart is made of stone. And yes, there is a large cast, but not as large as in, say, ‘Strangers' or ‘From the Corner of His Eye'.
This is a darn good novel; it has everything, love, horror, terror, hope, redemption...and in spite of the 600+ pages it is a fast read, immensely gripping, and not easily forgotten (but I'm also one of those guys who found that ‘Mulholland Drive' has lots of meaning, and who never have found a movie going by so quickly).
Highly, highly, highly recommended.
Though I'm an “old man” and this is a book for teens, I liked the premise of the story.
It startes out really good and had a nice ending, but there was just too much filler in the middle which really didn't have anything to do with the story.
Somehow, this title keeps jumping onto the “read”-shelf, whenever I try to put in onto the “Did not finish”-shelf.
Admittedly, I'm very close to finishing it, but I haven't been reading in it for a loooooooong time, so would probably have to go back a bit to remember some of the story and that ain't gonna happen.
It started out promisingly enough with weird going-ons interspersed with interviews and articles about what happened before the unfortunate group ended up on the remote island.
But quickly I felt that it was the same over and over again. I didn't mind the gore at all, some of it actually got under my skin (no pun intended), I didn't even mind the animal cruelty, animal lover as I am, as it's just fiction. But I had a hard time getting invested in the characters and - quite frankly - telling them apart.
Also, I found myself not caring about who lived or died or if ANY of them lived (which some of the “flashforward” interviews suggest that at least one does). For a story to work you have to have someone to root for. This is the same reason I didn't like Hostel, because the main characters were all jack-asses.
It's a rare thing for me to not finish a book, but I will give the rest of this one a pass.
Maybe, someday, when I'm hard-pressed for reading material, I will finish it.
