🏀Just finished Beneath the Stands, the second book in Emily McIntire’s Sugar Lake series, and I am officially obsessed. After devouring her Never After series (which is low-key one of my favorite things I’ve ever read, period), I went into this hoping for the best, and it totally delivered.
🏀This series is honestly the cutest. If you’re looking for spice, I’d say it’s a solid 1.5 to 2 stars—it’s not totally over the top, but the writing is so well-done and the emotional hits are heavy. My feelings have been all over the place! I’m sitting here now trying to decide if I liked this one or the first book better, and it’s a toss-up. Emily McIntire is easily one of my all-time favorite authors; at this point, I will read (or listen to!) literally anything she puts out.
🏀Speaking of listening, I’ve been doing the audiobooks for these and the narration is 10/10. Absolute perfection. 🎧
🏀The dynamic between Becca and Eli? Phenomenal. I am such a sucker for the best friend’s brother trope, and their push-and-pull is just... chef’s kiss. They both bring that total Alpha energy to the table—you’ve got the grumpy girl vs. the sarcastic male, and the chemistry is just electric. I also love how seamlessly this ties back into book one; the timelines are so easy to follow, which makes the world-building feel really cohesive.
🩷If you need something to pull you out of a reading funk, this is it. I’m officially a Sugar Lake stan!
