It all felt a bit too surface level, there was a attempt to add depth, but to me, it didn't really quite get there? The characters fell flat, as did their motivations. and the supposed romance between the two felt... not really genuine? Especially with how it ended in my opinion.
I'll still read the next book, so let's hope that one is better!
