It started out slow but got better as it went on. The books starts with Juliette in a prison and eventually we meet Adam Kent. There is also Warner who has some ties to these characters.
There are still a lot of questions left to be answered in subsequent books. Why can both Adam and Warner both touch Juliette? What is really going on with the resistance and all the different powers people have? And what is Warner's true story?
But overall, this book was great. Tahereh Mafi has a very unique storytelling style that puts you right into the world.
This book was okay. I saw the twist coming in the first part of the book though, so that was disappointing, but other aspects of the book were enjoyable nonetheless.
This has a unique love triangle is well written. It is not overly dramatic or overly fake. It really seems genuine. But who knows how it plays out in future books.
Even though I love Robin Hood retellings this one wasn't for me. The writing style was not enjoyable and I found myself cringing at some of the descriptions.
DNF at 23%. I'm not connecting with any of the characters and I'm not a huge fan of the A Christmas Carol storyline with the Wild Hunt.
DNF at 15%.
Couldn't get past the poor writing. It was all tell and no show.
DNF at 72%. This started off strong but took a turn for the worst. This book was a bit cringy with the Joe Arden praise and really ruined the book for me.

When I read the summary for this book, I was definitely intrigued. A story about a magical house that is sentient and a girl's journey to save the house. However, this story was just not for me. Right from the second chapter, I was already put off by how “obsessed” everyone seemed to be with the house. I did not feel like there was a reason for it to be revered in the way it was. One character put it perfectly:
“Burleigh isn't human, Vi. It's not your family or your friend. It serves its own ends, and that is all. Even your father acknowledged that fact - a Great House puts itself first. This place does not deserve your loyalty or your blood or your tears. It is a monster bent on nothing but its own fire lit for you, every flower blooming at your feet, is nothing but a ploy to win your affection.”
I also did not like any of the characters. Wyn was interesting to me because he seemed to not be as obsessed with the house as everyone else. As I got further into the story, I thought the plot would pick up and I would maybe start to understand how the Great Houses were characterized but it never happened. I was reading this book for over a month and just never wanted to pick it up again because I just did not care about the story or the characters. Some people may love this book, but it was not the book for me.
Thanks to the publisher and edelweiss for a copy of the book

I couldn't do it. I thought I would be able to finish this, but I literally have no motivation to. I was not invested in the story at all...
I feel bad DNF this but I just did not want to force myself to get through it.
Non-existent world building.
I really struggled with connecting with this characters and understanding the world. The divide between humans and the merrow seemed artificial and everyone just accepting that this is how it has always been with them attacking each other. The prologue also seemed very out of place with the rest of the story. I normally love mermaid books but this one was not for me. This was also full of gore which I was not at all expecting. Thanks to Netgalley for the arc!
After waiting years for this book I'm super disappointed. I barely got into it and couldn't keep going the writing was so stilted and choppy.
Had to DNF due to terrible formatting. Will wait for the traditionally published version that will hopefully fix that.
Didn't get very far but the MMC was trying too hard and it was cringe.
