So bad...
Didn't care for the characters nor the story.
The writing and the rythm were awful.

This was brilliant.
From start to end, I lived in this book.

10 books, 9962 pages, 6 months.

But these are only number and don't reflect what I felt reading the Malazan book of the fallen. The depth I need in every books I read, was in the ten thick books.

This is not an easy story, neither the most complex one, but it's one of the most sincere I've ever read. When I started it with The gardens of the moon, I've never thought I'ld read such empathy, compassion, tragedy, social essays, human essays, philosophical passages...
It was way more than fantasy books. It was indeed epic and grandiose sometimes, but it wasn't the point of what Steven Erikson wanted to write. I can't compare with any other fantasy books because it's such a unique series, you'll never find another similar series.

The themes are powerful, you go through every forms of love, grief, you feel like a father, like a mother, like a child, like a sister, like a brother, like a soldier, a commander, a betrayer, a murderer, a friend, a lover ... through all the povs and that's what I enjoy about reading: having a pov I've never/ won't feel or live, and Erikson put a lot of efforts in building these povs and make me feel like them. I lived the struggle with the characters. I lived the death of some characters like I knew them. I felt the dryness of the desert. I felt the hunger of children. I felt the harshness of life. I felt injustice.

The diversity of the characters is so realistic, from different skin colour people to autistic persons, without forgetting the 300 000 old living people (not realistic but ... you'll get an idea when reading the wise (?) words of the T'lan Imass

What just happened ...?

Sometimes, you read a book and through the pages, you feel the words, the flesh of the characters and their thoughts, that are, slowly but powerfully, anchoring in your deepest self.

This book is one of them.

I have no words for this novel.
This was my favorite Malazan book of the fallen so far. I was impressed, now I'm just wordless.

Dragons, humans, elves, dwarves, giants ... this was classical and just a new fantasy book without any originality. The characters and the plot were flat to me, and I was bored until the very last line.

BUT, the story was logical, there was no odd scenes, and the plot was solid, like without any mistakes done in the story.

Won't read the next ones though.
This is not what I'm looking for in fantasy.

Political fantasy ? Not at all.
This is a fan fiction written by a h*rny tennager, with elegant prose and some adult machinery (?).
That's a huuuuuge waste of time.

With a principal character being a crazy cold manipulative person, on Xanax (scales of a chimera ?). I've never read such a bad character.

Le style absurde de l'auteur m'a gêné pendant ma lecture, c'est bien dommage.

The first 150pages were very basic in my opinion and I didn't understand why it was so much appraised.
After reading a certain chapter (the XVI), I knew that it would be a very good reading and I wasn't wrong !

I'm eager to read the next books in this trilogy !

That was a really good 2nd book !
The rhythm was excellent, the tension rising slowly inutile a huuuuuge climax !
Gonna start the last one IMMEDIATELY.

It was really good but I miss the previous characters so much

The best book of the trilogy imo !

I loved how all the characters interacted with each other, the links are very interesting and well exploited: soldiers and general, a bro-mance, old lovers, new lovers, father and son, father and daughter, gods and men.

The end with Taniel convinced me a lot. I was surprised the author used the perspective of Two-shot, and not our self-expectations as readers, that's the best ending we could have.

Now let's get to the novellas !

Un début assez difficile, puis une remontée très intéressante avec des interactions originales et prenantes. Les personnages sont creusés, ils semblent humains et ne sont pas des représentations de soldats, mais d'Hommes qui luttent dans un monde propice aux douleurs de la guerre.

Je n'irai pas par quatre chemins, ce tome conclut à merveille cette incroyable trilogie.
Je n'avais jamais ressenti un tel attachements pour des personnages de fiction.

Le synopsis m'intéressait beaucoup. Au final, le roman est le penchant littéraire d'une série netflix sur fond d'inquisition. La trame de fond est plus qu'intéressante. Elle est bien narrée et aucun parti ne semble pris. En effet, les différents camps ne représentent nullement des caricatures dénuées d'intérêts, au contraire, l'héritage religieux, historique et social est très important et démontre une richesse au cœur même du danger.

Toutefois, ce qui m'a déçu ce sont les personnages. Je les ai trouvé creux, très émotifs, très lunatiques avec des transitions bien gérées au début, en Espagne, mais vite bâclés par la suite. Les relations amoureuses m'ont semblé tout droit sorties de séries netflix avec cette recherche de soi à travers les relations sexuelles. Elles sont téléphonées et bien que poétiques, n'en restent pas moins légères et vides à souhait. Elles ne me semblent pas justifiées, tout comme certaines phrases très critiquables (et surtout actuelles) et qui s'affirment comme vérité ici, sans débat, sans contradiction si ce n'est une remarque idiote.
La construction du personnage de Sinan a été très irrégulière. D'un début très intéressant (bien que le pere cliché m'a beaucoup dérangé car très manichéen), l'arrivée à Montpellier a été un plongeon dans l'absence de nuances.

Au final et pour résumer, cette lecture a été plaisante sur le côté historique et social mais le traitement des personnages et des religions (ça aurait pu réussir, il y avait de très bon éléments au debut), a été trop irrégulier et fondées sur des clichés nous faisant sortir du livre, après avoir levé les yeux au ciel à de maintes reprises.

Quelle fin ... juste époustouflante.
Un manga favori qui saura rester gravé en moi.
