I thoroughly enjoyed Curry's narration. This is the the first time I've read this book. I've owned it for years now, but never listened before. I was determined to read it this year! So glad I did. I love the the various movies. My favorite is The Muppets version.
Hugh Grant's version is awesome too!!!
This was a pleasant surprise. I picked up this series only because of Joseph Nassise. He's one of the writers and I love his Templar Chronicles series. I wasn't sure I'd like this series as I'm not really into the Arthurian legend. However, this was a good start! Is it the best fantasy I've ever read? No, but it was a fun and fast read. I like the characters. I'm definitely reading the rest!
I wanted to love this book so much. And for the most part I do. However, there are parts I just can't get over. The ableism/inspiration porn is so rich in this book. I'm sorry if a toddler broke her back while in her mentally ill mother's care child protective services would have removed her and and her sister from the home. The toddler is paralyzed after all. The way disability is described in the book rubs me the wrong way. There was no nuance to the description of schizophrenia either. When the book began I was excited to see how disability would be handled in this world. I love this genre, but I never read books that have people like me in them. Maybe I'm just reading the wrong books. People with disabilities exist in the world, but we are never included in these books. So I'm happy that Ee tried. I just wish she had done some research into our world beforehand. I will read the rest of the series because I already own them, but also because I do like the story overall. And I'd recommend it to my friends despite its flaws.
I liked this book, but Jazz as a character didn't exactly work for me. I kept thinking she was Mark Watney if Mark were a 26 year old Arab woman. Fun read. I bet it's better as an audiobook. I think I would've been very disappointed if I had read it. Rosario Dawson was amazing. Her accents were so good. I truly believed she was an African man.
I had high hopes for this book considering I had heard nothing but good things about it. However, my hopes were immediately dashed. There were just so many uninteresting characters who added very little to the story. Inman is so boring I found my mind wondering during many of his chapters. The Ada chapters are the most interesting in the book. Ruby is a bad ass and I'm 100% here for her!!!! The problem with the Ada chapters are that we don't spend nearly enough time with them. Just when things are getting interesting with Ada and Ruby, Inman is forced back on us. But this is a man's world/book so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
The audiobook needs to be re-recorded. It's terrible. You can hear every jump cut. Some parts are louder than others. And the chapter titles all sound different from the rest of the book. I got this book on Audible and listened to it at 1.25x. Frazier's reading was too slow at 1.0x.
