An easy, quick read... interesting, well-written, entertaining. I like the exposure to traditional Botswana ways and the main character's clever but not manipulative way of finding things out. I wanted some light reading in the first trimester of my pregnancy as I had other life stressors at that time and this fit the bill.
Tom Robbins is always good for intelligent writing with clever metaphors, dashing and colorful characters and a good dose of sex. People over-analyze, wanting every book to be better or more clever than the next, take it for what it is: smart, silly, a little saucy, entertaining. I don't think Tom Robbins ever fails to deliver that. Loved the mythical tanuki.
Enjoyable, believable, clever, mythical. A story of a boy raised in India by a zoo-owner father and mother. When they decide to move to Canada, the subsequent wreck of the Japanese cargo ship carrying all of them leaves the boy on a lifeboat with an interesting group of beings, at least at first. Don't miss the transcripts at the end.
My all time favorite book, a literary roller coaster ride, the only book I've reread and done so right after finishing it. This is not coming from a die-hard Robbins fan, I just loved this book.
