I almost didn’t finish this book. The bones of the book are good, meaning the premise of the story is a good one which is why I picked up in the first place but other than that it was a complete dud. There was no meat on those bones! Didn’t care about the characters, they seemed to just get together willy nilly. No invested interested in any of them. And the writing just wasn’t good.
I’m curious about the world that these characters live in. The first book is more about the characters and less about the World. Reading other’s reviews, their questions are legit. I just see the characters taking precedence in this first book with many questions remaining about the World they inhabit.
This book was a slow burner, started slow and it was a bit difficult to get into it but then it picks up and gets better. The author reveals the story through two characters telling their story from different times and their perspectives. It took me a while to appreciate that type of storytelling but I did come to think it was a nice unique way to do it. There is a lot of things going on and so I did get lost in who was who at times. The magic systems allows for people to be reborn and switch bodies which leads to some difficulties keeping up with who is who and who is relative to who.
Ugh, I finished it. This book took me in so many directions and not in a good way. I guess I'd just say I was confused for most of it. There are so many things that are touched on but not really developed at all. Another reviewer stated that the main character was not likable and that's very true. It took a conversation from one of her ex-lovers halfway through the book for me to realize that. I wasn't really putting my finger on it until then. When you read about the Centre you know there is a secret and one starts hypothesizing what it could be. What it actually is was disturbing and I almost stopped reading the book there. Basically the book wasn't satisfying in any way.
Another great book from the author! Again, she brings out a side of the time period that I never heard of or considered in a very compelling way. I love it when I can;t put a book down and this was one of them. I was engaged with the main character and felt with her all the joys, triumphs, heartbreak, struggles, demons etc. You think you know a time period or about the Vietnam War from the history books and historical commentary but you don't. This book vividly displays that and I'm so glad I read it.
Light and easy read as usual from Nora Roberts. I'm glad she has stepped out of the formula of three lives for the last couple of series. While those are comforting that one knows what to expect a bit, it's nice to have a bit different. I always struggle about how to rate her books as they aren't blow your socks away s but they are a comfort for me. I usually call them Cotton Candy books. For this series I like the main character of Breen and her coterie from home. Still not sure what I think of Keegan as he is a bit arrogant and not very approachable. Love Marco and can't wait to see what kind of trouble he gets into on the next books,
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, much different that the “Temeraire” books in the past. It does get a bit exhausting to see how the students of the Scholomance have to always protect themselves. But that's the thing, I FEEL the anxiety of it all which makes it a good thing, I guess. El is a character after my own heart with her snark, self awareness and her impatience with all things associated with selfishness of those around her. Looking forward to the next book!
I liked learning something new and putting things together. I could have done without all the snark. I listened to this book like I did the author's podcast series “Bag Man”. Which was awesome. This was an ok book maybe if I had read it instead of listen to it, it would have been better for me. Again, loved the subject material and I learned a ton but some days I just needed a break.
What a good book. It was an easy read which in no way takes away from the book but in many ways adds to it. There are so many layers and so many ways to really look at things. Many, many things to look at, ponder, remunate, etc. I will be thinking about this book for awhile. It's one of those books that sticks with you.
I'm glad I listened to this book rather than read it. When I thought it was over, it wasn't and it kept me from looking too far ahead and guessing so I was more surprised. If I read the book I would have known it wasn't over and would have been guessing regarding the next parts of the story. As with any Nora Roberts book, I liked it. Nothing deep. I call these cotton candy books and it did the trick!
I really enjoyed this book via audiobooks. The narrator was good and definitely kept me up to speed with all the characters amd their different voices. I loved the fact that there were all these storylines and while I should have seen the ending, I didn't. Which in and of itself was refreshing. I actually teared up at the end. This book was a reminder of why we should consider the plight of the refugee as well. In a way I hadn't thought about in the backdrop of history.
This was just ok. I'm reading a lot about white privilege which has led me to read more about our history from other viewpoints. Not just from the “winners”. This book added to it and it was an interesting take on the underground railroad but just not my style. There was a lot of imagery and poetry in the writing but nothing that grabbed me as far as the storyline. Although books like this tend to stay with me so we'll see.
