This series was just ok, and ending was blah. It's kind of how many Fantasy books are written. Young male protagonist gathers his supporters to beat the big bad, fall in love with one of those supporters and the big bad is vanquished. Then another's out into its place, big crescendo, vanquished/killed bad guy and at the end everyone lives happily ever after. Blah!
I've always like Feist's books and his book was no exception. Love that it's set in a new world and I'm excited to see what the next books will bring. I'm invested in the young characters in the book and what to see what the element of “magic” will bring to the story as well. I expect we'll see more of that on the follow up books. Well written good storyline that keeps this moving along.
Not sure what to think of this book except I probably won't be reading anymore of this series. I skipped through a lot of paragraphs as the author was a bit verbose for me. The premise of the conflict was interesting but that's about it. And I never was fully drawn into it. There were some comedic points with the machine on board the ship but I was never really impressed with the main protagonist and what he stood for.
The first part of the book got a little long and I couldn't help but start thinking “really?!” I was wondering why there were so many pages left and I couldn't imagine what else would or could be written. Once the 2nd part of the book started and from a different point of view, I flew through the rear of the book.
It was a delightful way to tell a story!!
Although I normally read these types of books but I enjoy the author's fictional works so I thought why not? Besides the narrative of the expedition, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I learned a lot about deseases. Learning the history of how the New World basically “poisoned” and wiped out the population of those countries they visited. It was horrifying. And putting it in perspective of how the tables can turn on “us” was also eye opening.
This took me a while to get into which I was surprised about as usually [a:Tad Williams 6587 Tad Williams https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1191183065p2/6587.jpg] grabs my attention right for the beginning. After getting through the whole book, I understand why it was such a slow burn and of course I'm hooked and can't wait for the next book in the series. I'm still not a fan of Morgan but I don't think that you are supposed to be at this time. grin
Reading about the horrors of WWII through this book was eye opening. As an American I know our side of what happened during the war but you forget or never paid attention in High School to what happened in Europe. I knew that France and other countries were invaded and occupied but this book took that meaning to another level. Compelling characters and heroines as well as “feel like you are there” descriptions brought this book to life for me. I'll be thinking about the stories of the brave women resistance and the many ways they fought against their oppressors for years to come.
Slow to start, I wasn't sure why I should care about any of the characters for the first half of the book. I liked the stories inside the novel about the God's and the beginning of the World and I did grow to somewhat like the main characters. However, the whole book just felt like it was a set up for the next books in the series and not much happened. Because of that I'm not sure I'll read any other books in the series.
This book grabbed my attention and kept me interested in the story and the main characters throughout. I actually got the Audible edition so that I could listen while I drove. That's how good it is, I didn't want to put it down! I loved the descriptions of what the students were learning. A book can get bogged down in the minutia of things but the author balances the teaching with the story and it is an enjoyable read. I haven't given a 5 star in a while (I seem to get pickier as I age grin). Highly recommended and I cannot wait until Book 2 comes out!!
This book caught my attention from the beginning. Not sure why exactly. It was a simple read and the storyline was easy to follow. I just enjoyed it and the main character Maia. It was easy to relate to him and his struggles as he assumed the position of Emperor that he never considered would happen.
This was recommended by [a:George R.R. Martin 346732 George R.R. Martin https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1351944410p2/346732.jpg] and while I'm interested in Templars and Historical Fiction, this book did not grab my attention all that well. There are others in the series but I'm not really looking forward to reading them and will probably move on. I found myself “making” myself read the book to finish it. I think the characters weren't really fleshed out that well and I never found myself interested in any of them.
These books get better and better. I'm more invested in the characters in every book. This book allowed me to look at religion and current events more deeply. In general Fantasy and SciFi have made me overall a more accepting person of all religions. However as this book delves into religious fanatics are a menace and a detriment to society.
Originally I gave this book 3 stars but after thinking about it overnight I had to come back and switch it to 2 stars. I'm not one for bad reviews but I only finished the book to see what happened and was more annoyed reading the book than I enjoyed it. The characters were just not that well developed and I couldn't care less about any of them. There are a couple of more books in the series but I doubt I'll be reading them.
I'm not sure why but I got caught up in the story and couldn't put it down at the end. I like flawed characters that make me think that things aren't just black and white and this book has plenty. I like the surprising development and flashbacks of the Tearling Queen and how the Tear was formed. The story basically asks the question, is there such a thing as an utopian society and where is our society going now and where could it end up leading us? All questions that make me think a little bit more.
I finally read a David Weber novel! I've had this on my reading list for a while ever since I read a short story of his in Legends. Great introduction to a new World and I love the lead character. I'm a sucker for strong female lead characters! Lots of action. I got bogged down a bit with all the technical jargon sometimes but overall great intro to this series!
Hmmm, not sure how I feel about this book. I seem to have forgotten a lot from the immediate books before this series of books. However, it really wasn't an impediment to me understanding what was going on in these books. There is a new story with tidbits from the previous books. It was a little slow for my liking and I kept waiting for the shoe to drop on one relationship but it never went that way. I'm curious enough to continue reading the series and see where the author wants to take me.
Definitely an in-between book loved the first in the series when I read it a while back and was disappoints the next in the series wasn't out. The second doesn't disappoint with travel to another time, with deeper understanding of the characters and introduction of other intriguing ones. I can't wait to delve into the 3rd book now!
