Like so many of McKillip's books, this one is about magic. How you make magic out of power, and how you make magic out of emptiness, and out of loneliness, and out of love. And how you make love out of magic.
How indeed:

Somebody called this book a tragedy. I don't believe Zindell has ever written or could ever write one. My feeling, very fresh after having just finished it (and a little dull, after a terrible team meltdown and only a few hours of tortured sleep), is that The Remembrancer's Tale is a bridge: a stepping stone to the culmination of the whole Requiem for Homo Sapiens. The only tragedy I can see is if we never get to read that culmination; I for one would definitely like to spend more time with Danlo's children and the rest of this dazzling new offshoot of humanity. (I think I'd like to spend more time with children as a whole.)
Does the love story that drives the overall one work? Better question: does it inspire? I ... don't know. Not yet anyway. Time will yield a better-rounded answer. For now: I wish Rane and Maria had spent more time interacting; I wish I had come to know Maria better. (But perhaps that is the point of If I Am God, not of this novel.) One thing's for sure: Thomas Rane is very different from all the other main characters in Zindell's books. Not for one moment did I think, Ah, here comes X's new permutation. Rane is his own man (and very much one: I chuckled gleefully at his troubles with faux-Maria's ‘true' sex), not readily likeable, maybe too reserved for my taste–but then who wouldn't be, after living for a century and a half? As I lived with him, through him, my heart sometimes grew old and heavy. Other times, it got wild and freaky. But it never got bored. :D
Enough prattle. You are here for the choice bits, aren't you?
Here they–
Wait, what? Am I less lonely now, you ask?
I ... don't know. Maybe? :)
Now, here they are:

I read an ARC, kindly provided by the author's agents. The text of the final version may differ.
Peter S. Beagle's latest novel is a tour de force that allayed most of my fears after the shock that was The Way Home. (This will become “all my fears” when I see Beagle's next book. There will be one, yes, Cosmos, friend? :))
I think my reading notes make my case eloquently enough:

The first book of the Dream Rider Saga is fast-paced and suspenseful, ranging in tone from funny and heart-warming to blood-curdling. (I should add my blood curdles easily, the way I've been these past several months.) I really enjoyed the interactions between all the young characters–and the others, when they remembered they still carry young spirits inside.
Some of my favorite moments:
~ At one point, Will (the male protagonist) mentions his love of manga.
Well ... his first encounter with Case (the female protag)–plus a canopic jar–is as hilarious as anything a mangaka can come up. It was my first encounter with Douglas Smith's funny bone, and I was genuinely surprised.
~ And here's the actual purpose of superhero costumes:
“I met a superhero. A real superhero. He saves people. He has superpowers. He's brave. And all noble and stuff. And he is so freaking hot.”
“Yeah, he—wait, what?”
“That tight costume? Oh, shit! I mean, right?”
“Uh...”
“It shows his muscle-ly stuff. And his guy bits.”
“Guy bits?”
“And his butt. I mean, wow.”
“His butt? You're wowing his butt?”
She shrugged. “It's wowable.”
The final scene between Fader and Morrigan was a most welcome waft of warmth among the chilling events that surround it.
Thank you for boosting my faith in our hidden humanity.
