See allI like Katherine Addison's world building. It feels like a real world, like reading an old book, but everything in this world is something different. She manages to insert explanations and descriptions in the story in a natural way, I never need to ask about something, but I'm not getting infodumped either. I love it.
There were some loose threads and themes and ideas that were presented but not [insert the word I have forgotten] further, and that bugs me a bit. But I will forgive, because I love her world, writing, characters, stories...
I am really glad this is a start of a series, even though I was slightly disappointed it wasn't about the Goblin Emperor.
This is the story of “Bertha”, Rochester's wife in [b:Jane Eyre 10210 Jane Eyre Charlotte Brontë https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1557343311l/10210.SY75.jpg 2977639]. It helps to have read Jane Eyre first. This is painful. Horribly painful. I have to say that I didn't like Rochester much in Jane Eyre. Now I hate him. I feel sort of bad for Jane, but I believe she is good enough to stand up to that POS.
Some people say this is boring, but I didn't find it so. Sure, there's very little physical action, but the emotional action is quite enough :-DI find this story deeply moving and engaging, and I can't wait for the next book :-D (Though, I can, and I will, because I am in the middle of the Amazing Readathon, and I need to go sightseeing now, and read short books to collect points for my team ;-) But come July, and I'll be on to [b:The Stone Sky 31817749 The Stone Sky (The Broken Earth, #3) N.K.
