Well hmm. I dislike the author, I dislike the sexism and the scientific explanation were too detailed and boring to but I it was hard to put the book down and I kept thinking about and comparing the world of it to the real one. The writing style/ translation is good and besides the philosophical and dystopian topics I just love this one ex-marine cop character that actually is the most clever (and funny) one out of all those scientists. I considered not continuing the series but I give the second book a go bc I want to see what happens to Da Shi :)
There are many reviews/comments condemning this book as anti Iran/Islam propaganda. Maybe I some eyes it is. But to me the story Betty told about her Life in Iran in the 80s felt never hateful towards the people.
There were many good moslem people who tried to help and console her they just couldn't do much not because of their anti American sentiment but because they couldn't act against the law. The regime and Moodies fanatical family are the villains in her story. Not Iranians. Sure there was the horrible people police but she also wrote her realization that all those aggressive law enforcers seem to be brain washed since the first grade as they tried with Betty's daughter Mahtob when she was forces to go to school there.
Also Betty herself found Islam and praying to Allah as something positive, she did it often. Where is there hate against Moslems?
I think patriotism and wokeness blind peoples eyes to her message. It's about fear, abusive of power and bravery to overcome these.
I finished this book feeling pity for Betty, Mahtoob and Iran and the people who live in misery there.
There are so many sub plots going on omg.
Maybe it's Jun Wu who is retraumatizing Xie Lian? State preceptor would be too obvious. Jun Wu is sus bc he is the only one in heaven that isn't dirty & he made Xie Lian go to Wuyong.
Am I crazy or does it seem like Pei Ming has a thing for Rain Master? I mean like... does he genuinely care for her? This peace of sexist shit? Are we having a redemption arc soon? (Not that I need that)
Even Qi Rong is experiencing fatherly feelings towards Guzi now XD How that mortal kid isn't dead yet is the biggest mystery of the book(lol no but it is one of)
Why am I the only one that remembers Wind Master?! What happened to him?! I feel like Black Water still wouldn't kill him (hopefully)
Why is this extra book the best one in the series? It was so exciting to read! And why did it still end with a cliffhanger?! The author didn't just conclude the story of Shio and Nezumu fighting against No. 6, she started another arc! And now? Where is the continuation?! What will happen to Shion? Will he also get corrupted by the power he now holds? Will he meet his selfish father who is trying to mess with the City? And will Nezumi go back and try to protect Shion again?
PS: I am glad we didn't get Chapter for Rikiga, I hate this character.
Es gibt in diesem Buch nichts über dramatisches. Es ist wirklich nur eine Lebensgeschichte einer sehr normalen/typischen koreanischen Frau (fast zu langweilig) und ihre Erfahrungen habe ich zich mal bei anderen Charakteren in Kdramas gesehen. Natürlich war die Respektlosigkeit und Diskriminierung trotzdem sehr nervenzerrend, aber ehrlich gesagt habe ich noch schlimmeres erwartet;
Die Paar Fakten von diversen Studien zur Koreanischer weiblicher Bevölkerung und Gesetze die im Laufe des Lebens des Hauptcharakters verabschiedet wurden, waren interessant zu erfahren.
Hard to enjoy a book when you dislike the main character...
I was just too much in her head. I didn't like to constantly read her extremely repetitive thoughts.
And the pacing of the story was off. Important turning points were skipped over. Told and not shown. Almost felt like reading a log book of historical events + a diary of a annoying person.
I actually stumbled upon a TikTok of an amazing artist that rapped this story.
It's is truly amazing to listen to the story in a rap version.

What's wrong with people? Is it one of these glitches in the matrix? Bc there is no logical explanation why this book is so popular. Not a single redeeming quality.
