This was a good book. The monster was great and the atmosphere was even better. The only thing was I couldn't care about any of the characters. The only character I even came close to giving two shits about was Mathias. This group of protagonists were just the dumbest group I've ever read about. While I was reading this, every decision they made just kept getting dumber and dumber, and by the time they got stuck on the hill,
I literally just didn't care at all.
To me personally, I just saw it in a way where the characters almost went out of their way to get themselves stuck in the situation they were in. But hey, if they had been a bit smarter, there wouldn't really be a story worth telling.
I would still recommend this is caring about the characters isn't an issue for you. The book was really fun, and again, the atmosphere was top tier
Overall it's a good story, the flashback parts were my favorite because the buildup of the religious fanaticism was really creepy!
However, I felt disappointed that we didn't really see anything from Angela, despite her being in the same situation as the other three characters. I feel that more backstory for her (and arguably all of the characters) could have really helped the book. David, Beth, and Deacon all felt like we started to get something really interesting, but it never got to the point of real connection to any of them.
Also, the romance wasn't really my favorite, it felt kind of just added in for the sake of it. I think it could have worked if the characters were more fleshed out.
In conclusion, it's a good book, but definitely not my favorite
In my opinion, this book was amazing. I loved Felix as a narrator (I tend to like when protagonists are authors; especially horror authors in a horror book)
I thought Felix was pretty funny and reading from his perspective really added to my enjoyment of the story. I feel it's important to note that I may have liked his perspective so much because I actually have almost the exact same viewpoint on the supernatural as his character does, so that may have made it more fun for me to read.
The banter and overall dialogue between Felix and Thomas was great and fun to read as well.
I loved the meta-ness of this book, as well as the overall tone to it. I like when books can make fun of themselves a bit, and that definitely happens throughout this.
The only thing is the ending, while I did catch a couple of hints that it was coming, it definitely still caught me off guard. That being said, after thinking on it for a bit, I do like the ending, but I can definitely see how it isn't for everyone. Maybe keep that in mind before you pick this one up.
This was a really fun, wintery horror! It took a bit for me to get into the story & to get on board with Ellie as a protagonist, but once it picked up I was really engrossed throughout the rest of the book.
Most of the Harpers were hatable, but not in an overly annoying or repetitive way, which made them very good villains. I also loved the creatures in this book, specifically the scene with Joda close to the start, that's what really got me hooked into the story
Overall, this book had great atmosphere, characters, monsters and villains and was just an overall very fun time! My only real critique is that the book was a bit long and some parts definitely could've been shaved down, but I'd still recommend if you're looking for a small town, wintery creature feature with lovable characters
