Gallows humor brought to adventure fantasy. This absolutely hooked me. Recommended for fans of Glen Cook and The Black Company.
Everything but the epilogue gets 5 stars, but I can't forgive the author's choice at the end. There would never be a moment of tension for me in the rest of the series, if consequences don't stick.

The further you get into the story, the better it gets. I've never read such a convincing depiction of the way time can slip by as one ages. Bear in mind that it was written in 1949, and is shaded by the gender ideas and roles of the time.
A tale of strange immortality. Layers that Frank Herbert fans will love.
