This book is about a Chinese family that illegally enters the United States. The story is told in 1st person from the eyes of 7-year-old Qian Wang. Both of her parents were professors in China. They moved to New York expecting America to be this wonderful place. However, the family experiences racism, poverty, and discrimination.
There were things I enjoyed about the book. But to be honest, this experience is typical for many minorities in this country, not just immigrants. I guess the only difference is, minorities born in America are not scared of being deported (or are theyđ¤).
I kept waiting on something unique to happen, but it didnât. I did relate to one scene that got me in my feelings. Iâm glad I read the book, but I wonât be recommending it to others.
