This story about four women scientists escaping Nazi Germany was pretty well told, the story did have a bit of a disjointed approach at telling the four women's stories, it wasn't chronological or one at a time, but their stories were interwoven. The willingness to blame women for men's choices did show up in this story when the talk of the nuclear bomb was started. Overall this was a decent and prescient story for the time.
I really enjoy Ali Hazelwood's writing style. She does a great job of telling a story and relating the characters to us as readers. I enjoyed the mature content in the book and I enjoyed the development of the relationship between our main FMC vampire and MMC werewolf. I will be picking up the next in the series and while I feel like some of the complaints about the book are valid, not every story is for every person and that is ok.
This is such a well written sci-fi, I found myself being shocked along with the characters, and very much looking forward to picking up the book while it was in progress. The story-telling was well done the issues at the heart of this story are still relevant and I am looking forward to learning the rest of the story before watching the revamped movies.
This was a good listen, quick and easy. I will definitely be looking out for times where I either quiet my inner wild woman or risk being to untethered. I am glad we are recognizing that women have the ability to make the world a better place if we stop hiding ourselves or making ourselves smaller to appease others.
Ehh... did I love it, no. Did I hate it, no. Do I think the ending was satisfactory? I don't know, it ended, things were wrapped up, the mate bond is doing some heavy lifting, the emotional magic was too close to being drugs and I honestly really disliked the FMC by the end of this whole thing. The arc of the series wasn't super impressive and ultimately I am glad I listened, I'm even more glad I finished this up right as it ended and I didn't have to wait for the conclusion. Overall a decent story but not likely to be a reread for me.
This story was interesting to see how many layers of plot there can be. There is a lot of gossip and almost a gossip girl feel to this novel. The characters are thrown into upheaval as all their secrets are made public and the people at the school must figure out what they are going to do. I would be interested in reading the next in the series.
This is an interesting story about the human desire to try and prove ourselves. I will admit I struggle to not feel like this and many other deaths are senseless but perhaps their failures to survive and return can stand as an example of what happens when you don't prepare, or accept help, when you have decided you know best and don't receive any of the well intentioned advice, assistance, or care. Ultimately earth wins against humans. It was here before us and will be here well after we annihilate ourselves. I was glad to have listened to this book and Jon Krakauer does a great job of telling these kinds of stories.
This story was pretty good, the pacing was a little weird, and I honestly really hate when the FMC is so down on herself... it isn't a good look for women and while I get that people struggle with self confidence I don't necessarily want my FMC to act that way when there is a literal dog drooling over her... I may continue the series but this is light and fluffy and overall not super deep.
Interesting start to a series, a warlock/wizard detective and interesting world building, I may give another book or so a try. This was an easy listen that kept my attention and was well paced, I liked the layers and how everything developed. I described this as a story that was set up episodically and had Criminal Minds or Law and Order vibes mixed with Charmed.
I truly wish the DNC had been more supportive, I also wish all the tech bros weren't a bunch of little b.. anyway I enjoyed the humanity of Kamala. I hate that she has been so correct on her observations of the cow turd we currently have as a president but here we are. I am so glad she tried, it shouldn't have been so hard and I will struggle to forgive Biden for not being a better cheerleader for the democratic party. It turns out you can still be an ass even if you are a good guy.
This is a viking inspired story of a young woman who is traumatized by seeing the death of her father and he tells her where she is to go next, Kopa, in the hope of finding a safe haven. As she attempts to move in the direction her father sent her she runs into some ruffians as well as discovers that she is being hunted and she manages to find a few ways through before ultimately teaming up with the King's men and convincing them through her food and ingenuity that she will be a bonus to their to team and worth the effort for them to take her to Kopa. She didn't realize they were King's men when she decided to travel with them, and they certainly don't know her background or realize that she is being hunted by the Queen's people.
Interesting research into the killing of women. I was surprised to learn about the much higher death toll for women in the Scottish witch hunts. It is unfortunate how often women are vilified for their ability to help others and hold knowledge. The utter depravity of these “men” who must hold trials and come up with awful ways to mistreat women's bodies. It is a continuation of the power struggle in which we see that as humans we will never be capable if we keep killing women.
I really enjoy the full cast and sound effects. There are only about two times in the first part that I felt the background noise was more annoying than atmospheric. Story-wise I feel like there is a lot of extra information but that this is a fun world to explore. I definitely don't relate to the characters especially now that I am 40, I do love them but feel like their ages aren't really representative of the time in their lives. They could easily be aged up or sexed down.... at least that is my perspective.
This series has been an adventure. It has been interesting to see the FMC become the villian and to realize the mistakes she has made. I am not certain if I really like this series for me, but I can appreciate the story and the effort that has gone into the creation of this world. I am interested to see if our book homies are going to be able to get themselves out of the pickle they find themselves in at the end of the story.
This book put into clear perspective how much toddlers and tech bros have in common. I was literally so disgusted to hear about the treatment that women in tech have suffered and how awful some of these people with more money than god behave. It makes me want to delete Facebook and all things Meta because it is run by a bratty toddler man.
I really appreciated the perspective on the history of America from the Black perspective. It is a really intriguing and useful read and I hope more people take the opportunity to learn from Black people when they put forth the effort to educate. There are several stories that overlap with traditional perspectives and how they are quite clearly written by the victors, especially in the attempts to not acknowledge the crimes against humanity, the truly horrific practice of enslaving people, and the refusal to acknowledge the harm caused.
It is truly disgusting how much this rich, depraved man got away with. And the number of people in power who have looked the other way and ultimately cosigned all of the bad behavior, unbelievable. I am incensed at the total lack of accountability and that this is still pervading our political landscape. Believe victims, stop letting these sociopaths decide what is best for us as people. I want a world where my kids are safe to live and play and never interact with monsters like Epstein/Maxwell/Wexner/Trump/Acosta etc.
If you are interested in fashion history, the inner workings of a fashion house, the eccentricities of millionaires and their drama, then this book may be for you. There is a lot of family information in this book, but there is also a lot of business talk which can get kind of boring. Ultimately this story was entertaining enough that they made a movie about it and honestly with drama, murder, fashion, and money how could you go wrong?
Well further proof that the world was designed for men, by men, and at the expense of women. These women deserved better. There are too many young men being raised so inappropriately that they think they are “good” guys and ultimately they are the monsters, raping and taking advantage of women they were friends with or knew personally. They are the monsters that we are warned about and it sucks because they are dressed in sheep's clothing. This highlight on a small white, christian town and the perversions of its sons is incredibly disheartening and proof that they don't have all the answers and shouldn't be in charge of everything. The college tried to do right by the young women but that police and justice system are fucked.
A decent second installment, it has one of my least favorite FMC activities, playing dumb, making dumb choices, or intentionally not noticing important things which again leads to the whole being dumb thing. I happen to be quite critical of FMCs but ultimately I still enjoyed the storytelling and will continue the series.
