TW: Internalized Homophobia, Slurs, Insults, and anti-LGBTQ mentality.
This book starts off rough, I'm not gonna lie, as someone from the south who grew up hearing a lot of the awful things the MC believes in the first chapters of the book, its always jarring to remember being in that mindset. That said, I think the author really knows the subject matter, and it's interesting to see the MC grow.
I didn't like it at first, but the characters grew on me throughout the story. It's hard to write with a main character that's standoffish and proud, and I think it was done marvelously! I loved all of the side characters, and how nobody finished quite how they started. A very fun read, I highly recommend the audio book!
I rather loved this southern gothic story! It really leans into the horrors of the south's past, with an emphasis on how often time the power to change things in large ways is only allotted to those already unfairly in power, while those below have to struggle or luck out to get ahead. I enjoyed the main characters, and the grappling with self. Overall, I think the story handled itself very well, and showed one person's struggle against the ghosts of his past, both metaphorical and real.
–I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!–
I highly enjoyed learning more about the wonderful people who helped to shape our world. As somebody who does a lot of reading and research into people from different pasts and religious ideology than I was raised with, I loved how many similarities I felt with the stories of these people. Every person is different, and every person has common ties to the next. I do feel like it was a bit hard for me personally to read because of how blocky it was with the amount of text to picture ratio. It would probably be best as a research book, I'm not sure kids would be able to plow through the amounts of text. However, it was very understandable, relatable, and informative. We could use more books like this on the shelves!
** A Warning for those with high empathy in reading who have trouble with anxiety **
If you are like me and get lost in the minds of the main character, it is easy to fall into Adrien's mindset. Just remember to take small breaks while reading to find your center.
I absolutely adored this book, although I wonder if there may be more? A spinoff series about other characters? A piratical venture? I want to stay in this world, and keep comfort in it's waters.
Thank you, Mackenzi Lee, for giving me a series where I related strongly to both the main character and to different aspects of others. I feel safe in the wolrd you've created, and seen by the stories you've woven.

This one was a harder read than I expected when picking it up on a whim in a bookstore. The lighthearted color palettes and goofy characters had me lulled into a sort of amused peace until the flashbacks detailed some of the more painful parts of Arima's past. I feel like ‘I have gender questions purely based on trauma' is a well covered trope, but it was handled in a very interesting way. The art was amazing, and I'd give it 5 stars for artwork alone! The expressions were raw and emotionally jarring. I only hold a star back because it should have a content warning of some kind on the back? Like, It's detailed and sudden. I feel like it could be very upsetting to somebody who dealt with that sort of trauma.
