I'm sorry but
The formatting is confusing
The news says that this is an NPR book of the year
And that people talk without quotations
The writing was a struggle for me to follow and the first chapter was really strange.
I may need to get a physical copy in order to read this.
2.5 ⭐ rounded up for the cover.
This is a rather powerful novel. Octavia E. Butler continues to impress me. While it did take a bit to get into, her writing is beautiful and intense. A little slow in the middle as some books are, but still definitely worth picking up. It isn't quite as good as Kindred, but it was still a good read. 4.5 ⭐
Good writing, but just wasn't enthused by the author during several points, the biggest being that she refuses to sign any more petitions. Ignoring the problems is never the answer. And quite a lot of religious references within, that could have easily been without. Otherwise, I did like bits of this, but I don't think I'll buy a physical copy. 3.5 ⭐
Dnf'ing at 50%. I just can't. So much “oh God save us” and “lord jesus” and “these stupid satanist scum!”
I get this is meant to be a reflection of the time period, but the Japanese weren't that eager to die for their beliefs. The author took several liberties throughout this book and while the writing was fine, on the whole of it, I was thoroughly bored.
You'd think I'd be interested in learning what happens to Blackthorne. No. He constantly is an annoyance, always going on about ‘i must get back to the ship so I can plunder these people who took me in and gave me food and water'. After a while, I just can't with these people.
And truly, the Japanese put up with a lot of shit from these Englishmen. I don't think I'd have near as much patience.
I'm giving this 3 ⭐. The writing was fine but the characters were just plain annoying af.
After three chapters, I'm dnf'ing this one. It's slow paced, the main character is an annoying wimp of a girl, and it's feeling like a tired evil must be defeated as we have an intimate pitifully written romance where she doesn't understand why she falls for the main male character, Corwyn. No thanks. 2.5 ⭐.
This didn't work for me. The characters felt childish and ridiculous. The storyline had potential but the writing felt stilted and if I had been a teenager I'd have maybe liked it more but it just seemed rushed. Not for me. 2.5 ⭐.
TW: rape, sexual assault, stalking, women being drugged and raped, assault
This was so good, but after a while Herbert drove me insane and not in the good way. Alternating two chapters from Olga to Herbert, this is a romance set in the past. I'm unsure if this was based on real events, in that I need to research, but it was very well written and believable. Olga I adored, even as Herbert was more frustrating than Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights! TW for racism, death of parents, war, and children being abused with corporal punishment (lightly mentioned, but still adding it). This was a very good book, one I'm hoping to add a physical copy of to my collection at some point. 4.5 ⭐!
